harnessing unreal engine with lewis capaldi

Recently, our team at FRAY Studio had the opportunity to design the video content for Lewis Capaldi's world tour. We were excited to use Unreal Engine as our main tool, in combination with real-time VFX from Notch, and rendered content. The flexibility and speed of Unreal Engine allowed us to push the boundaries of creativity, while retaining flexibility during the production process.

Unreal Engine is a powerful tool that offers many advantages over traditional render-intensive workflows such as Cinema4D and Redshift. Its speed, flexibility, and wide range of plug-ins make it an ideal choice for artists and designers looking to create high-quality 3D renders quickly and efficiently. The ability to render locally without the need for a render farm, also makes it a cost-effective option.

One of the highlights of the project was the ability to make changes quickly and efficiently. For example, we had a piece of content that was set in daylight but, just three days before the first show, we decided to move it to be moodier and set it at night, with saturated lighting. With traditional software like Cinema4D, making these changes would have been a difficult and time-consuming task.

However, with Unreal Engine, we were able to redesign the song and have a new version, rendered out of the full song, ready to look at within one evening. This level of flexibility and speed allowed us to make creative decisions on the fly, without the worry of re-rendering taking days.

While traditional software like Cinema4D is still a valuable tool for certain tasks, Unreal Engine has emerged as a powerful alternative for rendering. It offers a unique combination of speed, flexibility, and real-time rendering capabilities making it an ideal choice for a wide range of projects. By using a combination of both tools, our team was able to achieve the best of both worlds.
