Cinderella
Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella returned to the Royal Opera House for its seventy fifth anniversary, celebrating one of the Royal Ballet’s most cherished productions. FRAY Studio joined the creative team to help bring a renewed sense of atmosphere to Cinderella’s world, drawing on the traditions of theatre, film, dance and opera to support the production’s magical tone.
Working within Tom Pye’s set design, FRAY created original video mapped content that enhanced the story’s most transformative moments. The aim was to complement the delicacy and romanticism of Ashton’s choreography while adding subtle shifts in mood, colour and texture that could expand the emotional landscape of the piece. The visuals needed to feel effortless and integrated, supporting the atmosphere without distracting from the dancers or the structural beauty of the staging.
The content was designed to work closely with the physical environment, mapping precisely onto scenic elements to create changes in space that felt natural to the world of the production. These included gentle environmental transitions, moments of theatrical enchantment and scene setting that helped guide the audience through Cinderella’s journey from the hearth to the ballroom. All material was delivered using Disguise media servers, ensuring smooth playback and flexibility during the technical process.
The result is a visual layer that enriches the storytelling with a sense of lightness and wonder, helping this anniversary staging honour the tradition of Ashton’s work while offering audiences a renewed experience of Cinderella’s magic.
